The Type III gauges have large flat tabs (with pointy teeth) at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock. The tabs are mounted at the rear of the gauge, and extend forward. They also tend to spring out away from the gauge. The front (o.k., so Front is Rear in this case!!!) of each tab digs into the back of the dash if you try to just yank the gauge out. This makes installation a snap: just push the gauge in with one hand, and snap! it's installed. To take 'em out, you've got to fish behind the dash and compress each gauge's tabs and push the gauge out. The clock has long enough wires that you can just pop it out without worries. For the speedo, you need to unscrew the speedometer cable. It enters the gauge on the bottom, left of center as you face the gauge. The rest of the connections (wires) are long enough for you to pop this gauge out, too. The gas/warning light gauge has so many connections that it's been designed with a huge plug block that receives all of the relevant wires from the harness, and this block unhooks from the gauge. So, just yank the block off the back of the gauge and go fishin'. I find the outboard tab of this gauge particularly challenging. You may find fusebox removal helpful; YMMV. Also, don't forget that once one gauge is removed it exposes a tab of its neighbor via the empty hole. -Greg gregm@vwtype3.org
