Type III Engine and Chassis numbers Like early VW chassis, early Type III engines were just numbered sequencially. The actual engine variety had to be identified visually or by a tag that specified the M-number to which it conformed. Starting with the 1966 model year VW introduced a numbering scheme which identified the engine type by incorporating a letter at the start of the engine serial number.
